Kaizo-Owned Nissan Skyline GT-R Impounded in San Diego
By Erin Riches | September 4, 2009

Before the R35 Nissan GT-R came out, we published an article about how to buy a Japanese-spec R34 Skyline GT-R. In it, we told you about Kaizo Industries, which remanufactures Skyline GT-R body shells to make them Department of Transportation (DOT)-compliant before they're exported here. Additionally, and crucially, the engine, transmission and differerentials are removed at this time, so that the car ships as a mere automotive component rather than a whole car -- and is therefore legal to import under U.S. law.

However, earlier this week, we ran across a letter from a Department of Justice attorney apparently addressed to an owner of a Kaizo-imported GT-R suggesting that the car in question "may not be in compliance with federal environmental and safety standards," in which case "it may not be operated on public streets" and may be "subject to seizure and forfeiture by U.S. authorities."

Now we've been forwarded a photo of a couple seized Skylines that are sitting on an impound lot in San Diego. One is apparently the R34 GT-R from Fast and Furious 4. The other is a Skyline GTS with GT-R fenders and an RB26 engine (i.e., the JDM 2.6-liter inline-6).

Here's the letter....

US Department of Justice Letter : 60 Days to Export or Surrender.

One Kaizo customer recently received a letter from the US Department of Justice about his vehicle. The letter is a little vague as it says ?if my information is correct?? , this sounds like they are second guessing themselves. They then say that non-compliant vehicles are subject to seizure and forfeiture.

Then the letter states that the vehicle must be exported within 60 days of receipt of the letter. We had a conference call with a few key people yesterday to start talking about organizing. If you want to try and be a part of this, please contact me at tyndago at gmail.com . Based on the information we have, this vehicle was imported as parts, and reassembled by the owner here in the US. The US allows for vehicles to be imported into the US as parts, and there fore was not ?illegally? imported as the US Department of Justice is implying.

Thanks for the news from September.

From my research they are coming after non-Motorex cars that are registered as 'federal legal'. California is a much larger pond, but the Feds don't really care. Claiming the car is legal when it was not was Kaizo's mistake. The only safe thing to do is wait until the car is 25 years old and then register it on the bill of sale. It's only a couple more years til the R32 makes that age.

Well, I just read about it in the latest modified mag. I'm sorry they aren't up to date.

I just like to give you a hard time. If you ever want to know anything Skyline, check out Sean Morris's website: http://gtrusa.blogspot.com/. He worked with Hiro at Motorex back in the day and knows a lot, although he was wrong about the Kaizo situation.
