I took my car there the end of June, and I asked Tom to please let me know what the problem was. I expected a written work order and estimate, and he gave me nothing. He seemed like a decent guy, but the he did a lot of work "allegedly" that I had not requested, and charged me over $300 for completely useless and uneeded "work". I spoke with him about it and he was obnoxious, rude, and questioned my integrity. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND GOING TO THIS SHOP, EVER! I also spoke to someone who bought a car from him, and then he charged 3x to fix things on the car they thought they had bought with some form of guarranty. BEWARE OF THIS SHOP, and drive somewhere else with a good reputation and always get a written estimate or you will get hosed like I did!

What work did you get done, what was wrong with the car, YOUR Very vague and undescriptive... What was the un-needed work that was done? What kind of vehicle was it?

I agree completely. And hearing 1/3 of 1 side is not enough to judge anyone.

I can imagine there's something here that's not being told. I've met the guy that owns the place and he doesn't seem to me to be "rude" or "dishonest" in any way. I will say that he is a bit precocious, but overall knows what he's talking about.

The car wouldn't start, and he proceeded to dismantle my dash and the other thing I asked was could he give me an idea what was wrong with the a/c. $623 later, I had a car with a dash with problems, and the starter didn't work the next day as well as I was severely overcharged to find out my a/c didn't work. He also broke my lighter connections which actually did work prior to his "fixing" the car. I called and asked if he could please reconnect them and was called a liar (in that they never worked). I took it to my regular mechanic and had everything fixed (except the lighters) for much less than he had told me it would take to most likely fix the a/c. I also was not called a liar by my regular mechanic or hosed either. As I said previously, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! I went to Tom as he was close, seemed decent, and boy was I wrong!

I always want to give everyone a chance, especially a veteran and in this case I was completely off base in trusting him. I gave him several opportunities to do the right thing, and he just got more obstinate. My recommendation is go somewhere else.

I agree! I have gone back to doing what I can myself, and the rest I take to the Auto Skills Center on Fort Benning where they are VERY helpful! Especially Don and Austin.

I stumbled on this thread thanks to a buddy of mine who sups up his cars. I was kinda surprised how the recent post have gone. I did business at this shop as recently as last week and i must say Tom did an excellent job on my stuff. but thats vague so please indulge me while i go into story mode.

First off im not a big gear head or car guy, i know how to do the basics and i know how to driveem, thats pretty much it. I let smarter people tinker with my car. My firebird started making a weird knocking noise under the seat a few months ago whenever my car was going downhill or when it was in low RPMs and coasting. The problem wasn't consistent. i took it to a few of the big chain repair places looking for the problem and a quick fix. Lets shorten the story by saying that a couple thousand dollars and replacement parts for almost the entire front suspension and such (struts, gaskets, bushings, brakes...etc). the noise was still there and i was pissed. A good friend of mine heard my car knocking when he rode with me and said to take it to Tom.

I showed up and listened to him shoot the shit for 30 minutes. (He is a talkative guy who loves to go off on tangents about cars. but what do you expect) He jumps in the car with me and spends 15 minutes driving it around til he says he has a pretty good idea of some things that might be wrong and he says to show up tomorrow. He even came in early so i could drop it off before i head into work. I get a call 3 hours later. The problem was my exhaust bouncing on the frame when it flexed. Something simple and stupid the other shops never took the time to look at or actually drive the car. He fixes the problem, with a vice grip and a little elbow grease. Too easy, and its only gonna cost $30 for the hour or so he spent making sure it was completely fixed. He also noticed a big problem with one of my rear brake sets (also from the chain repair places). He calls me up, tells me about it and asks if i wanna gettem done while it is in the shop. He gave me about 3 different price possibilities depending on what might need to be replaced after he actually takes a better look at it. he does all of this over the phone but he offered to show me if i come out there. Or i can just pick it up as is. i say go ahead.

I get my car back later that same day. running like a dream, NO KNOCKING!!!! ( id been driving it for 5 months like that, driving me fucking crazy). Then he spent 40 minutes showing all the crap wrong with my brakes and how they are now fixed. Like i said, im not supercar guy but even i could tell those brakes were gonna fuck up soon. The price was reasonable and its uncommon for the owner of most shops to devote that much time to one guy. I was really happy to find an actual mechanic and not just a parts replacer. And all that stuff on my breaks is warrantied around the nation.

End of story: car is fixed, i have now found my new shop for all my future problems, and i would recommend this shop to my own mother... if she ever decided to drive a car other than a minivan...

wow, that came out much longer than i expected but i hope it was thorough enough to get my point across.

P.S. Tommy also has a sicknasty Mustang he is tweaking up in there that makes even below average carguys like me drool. But i warn you, ask about it and he will feel compelled to crank it up, shatter your eardrums and give you an hour long show and tell.

Great read. That gets a point across a lot better than just saying "Don't go there."

Every time I've talked to Tommy, he's been the same way and been straightforward. I still want to get a tune from him, just haven't gotten down there.
